This is a sublime expression of Nebbiolo from this passionate Paso Robles garagiste.

Production

Nebbiolo pays homage to the great wines of Barolo and Barbaresco. Grapes are grown in the Paso Robles AVA in the Central Coast region at 488 masl where the soils are silty clay loam over calcareous substrate. It matures for about 24 months in neutral French oak and over 6 months in bottle prior to release. It is well structured and built to age. Utilizing a lengthy postfermentation maceration on its skins, its formidable tannin is refined to a cellar-worthy, yet immediately approachable profile. Only 120 cases of this wine were made.

  • Tasting notes

On the nose cherry and pomegranate lead, followed by the more succulent impressions of Luxardo cherries and strawberry. This juicy element is seasoned with dashes of charcoal, flint and underbrush. On the palate there are more earth elements than the nose suggests. The cherries are tart. Cranberry and pomegranate flavours add freshness. The charcoal, flinty minerality can be tasted, but also contributes to the texture.

  • Food match

Truffle or wild mushroom risotto, grilled fillet steak and braised beef dishes. Goats’ and sheeps’ cheeses would also work well.

  • Meet the producer

Paso Robles is one of the most diverse AVAs in California and it's great to have found a producer who is not only unique in the region but also a rarity in the state.

Giornata wines are beautifully made and come with a simple and genuine story. Brian and Stephanie Terrizzi have spent the last decade proving that California can make both interesting and high quality Italian varietal wines. Brian is the winemaker whilst Stephanie is the viticulturist - both trained at Fresno State University. After several years in Tuscany working and living with Brian’s family, they returned to Paso Robles to embark on their Giornata project.

They’ve now found a range of sites with compelling vineyards of Aglianico, Barbera, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Fiano. Steph manages these sites and retains full control in the vineyard. Whilst the fruit quality is unmistakably new world, winemaking leans more towards the Italian style with an emphasis on balance and subtlety over intensity and extraction.
