Mencia is the undisputed star of Bierzo with its gentle tannins, bright acidity and lighter style. Stylistically this is a cross between cool-climate Syrah and Cabernet Franc.

Production

Madai is the creation of the Amigo brothers, who returned to their native Bierzo to rejuvenate their grandparents' vineyards planted with old vine Mencia grapes (over 80 years of age). The wine spends 6 months on its lees.

  • Meet the producer

Brothers Daniel and Gonzalo Amigo returned to their roots to establish Bodegas Madai, recovering their grandparents' vineyards in El Bierzo, north-west Spain. Here, at the northernmost limit of Bierzo, their vineyards experience a continental-atlantic climate.

On steep, south-facing, slopes ideal for ripening grapes they discovered plots of old Godello and Mencia vines too - over 100 years old. They believe the established, gnarled vines on these old plots (around 4ha) have found a natural equilibrium, producing very low yields with no fertilisers and minimal intervention.

There are a variety of soil types in their vineyards - granite on the lower slopes and slate on the upper.
