A robust, complex and authentic style of Montepulciano produced in collaboration with celebrated local winemaker Alberto Serenelli.
Production
Alberto Serenelli is a well-known grower and winemaker in Marche - particularly respected for his Rosso Conero wines. He has top quality vineyards in the heart of the Conero area (near Ancona on Marche's eastern coast) from where these grapes are sourced. The vines grow on chalky soils at 200m altitude. The Montepulciano grapes are hand-harvested at the start of October and vinified in Serenelli's cellar. After prolonged maceration on the skins the wine is matured - partly in small barriques and partly in large casks.

Tasting notes
An intense and inviting nose of plum, dried fruit, black cherry, and spice. The wine is powerful with ripe blackberry and cassis characters, savoury and spicy with rich well-structured tannins, hints of dark chocolate and black pepper, and fresh acidity on the finish. A full, satisfying red with concentration and the ability to age.

Meet the producer
The 350ha Monte Schiavo estate in Marche is a testament to the Pieralisi family whose background was in olive oil manufacturing equipment, but 20 years ago began to invest in agriculture, also purchasing vineyards from the co-operative within Maiolati Spontini. The estate now consists of around 100ha of vineyard, 50 ha olive groves, and other agricultural crops. They own a portfolio of prime vineyard within the Castelli di Jesi zone, and the Monte Schiavo winery is situated amongst some of their most prized plots, notably the Colle del Sole vineyard.
Slowly Gennaro Pieralisi and his son Andrea have developed their winemaking capabilities and production. Although initially focused around the Verdicchio grape, over the last 10 years they have also developed a range of red wines from their own estate fruit (with the exception of their Rosso Conero, which is produced in collaboration with Alberto Serenelli).
The success of their manufacturing business has allowed the Pieralisi family to invest heavily in the estate. They use state-of-the-art technology, and as they have grown they have strived to improve quality and reduce yields.
The appointment of talented young winemaker Simone Schiaffino, and collaboration with renowned Italian winemaking consultant Carlo Ferrini since the 2015 vintage, has added a new depth and complexity to their portfolio.
