Production

In 2019 we experienced dry winters on the back of a dry 2018. Spring was warm with little rain, setting us up for another compressed harvest. In the vineyard focus was to ensure vines evaded the effects of heat stress; loose canopies to allow shading and judicious watering where possible. Due to the lack of rain throughout the season we experienced lower than normal crops, however quality was ensuring with small berried and intensity of flavour across the board. A great year for red wine.

The grapes were hand sorted and fermentation was whole berry in open vats. We used indigenous yeast and maturation was in older French oak. During maturation the wine was racked once and went through natural malolactic fermentation in the spring.

The Idiot is dark garnet in colour with a purple hue. This cool climate Shiraz is true to the region and variety. It has a fragrant bouquet with juicy red fruits and blueberry. The palate is brooding, with generous berry fruit and spice framed by fine savoury tannins.
