Villa Raiano excel at this grape variety, and this is a fine expression of Falanghina and the volcanic soils it's grown in. A pretty white with substance - the wet gravel and stone fruit notes balanced by a generous ripeness and perfectly poised acidity.
Production
The Falanghina vines are cultivated in the Benevento region at around 400m above sea level, on soils which are a combination of chalk, sand and clay. Whole bunches are soft pressed, and then fermentation and refinement takes place in stainless steel. Typically the wine is bottled the following February.

Tasting notes
Ripe and aromatic with tropical fruits and wild herbs. Crisp and incisive on the palate with pure, focused fruit characters - apricot, grapefruit and bitter lemon. This is nicely balanced by taut acidity, stony/mineral texture and a clean, savoury finish with lightly floral notes.
Food match
A very versatile white which suits a variety of simple and fresh pasta dishes, such as home-made ravioli.

Meet the producer
The family-owned Villa Raiano was established in 1996, in the village of Raiano, Campania. In 2009, a new winery was built on top of a hill amongst vineyards and chestnut woods, overlooking the River Sabato near San Michele di Serino in the Southern Apennines.
The Raiano family is dedicated to producing a range of wines from local grape varieties Aglianico, Fiano and Greco - primarily sourced (80%) from 20 hectares of their own organically farmed vines across three DOCGs. Aglianico is harvested from a single, 10-hectare estate in Castelfranci and Greco from two 4-hectare vineyards in Contrada Marotta, Montefusco. They also produce Falanghina from vineyards owned by local growers. The majority of production, however, is Fiano.
