A magnificent example of southern Italy's greatest red - rich, dense and complex yet suprisingly accessible. With fine tannins, plummy fruit and focused minerality, this strikes a perfect balance of rustic charm and urbane sophistication.

Production

The Aglianico grapes are souced from the Castelfranci vineyard. These guyot-trained vines were planted in 2004, in clay / chalk soils at an altitude of 500m. Typically harvested in early November, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with daily pumping over for 10-20 days. The wine is then matured in barrique and tonneau for 24 months.

  • Tasting notes

Ripe black fruits amd sour cherry on the nose with spicy, smoky, and meaty notes. Intense and finely-tuned on the palate with layers of spicy black fruits, liquorice and dark chocolate. With ripe tannins, and dry, savoury and lightly rustic notes, yet has deceptive finesse. This should happily keep for 10-15 years but is perfectly accessible now.

  • Meet the producer

The family-owned Villa Raiano was established in 1996, in the village of Raiano, Campania. In 2009, a new winery was built on top of a hill amongst vineyards and chestnut woods, overlooking the River Sabato near San Michele di Serino in the Southern Apennines.

The Raiano family is dedicated to producing a range of wines from local grape varieties Aglianico, Fiano and Greco - primarily sourced (80%) from 20 hectares of their own organically farmed vines across three DOCGs. Aglianico is harvested from a single, 10-hectare estate in Castelfranci and Greco from two 4-hectare vineyards in Contrada Marotta, Montefusco. They also produce Falanghina from vineyards owned by local growers. The majority of production, however, is Fiano.
